Apple Walnut Bars

My family loves this easy apple recipe.   Apple Walnut Bars are the best when you have apples available, fresh from the orchard in the fall, but they are delicious any time of the year.  I like them while still a little warm…with a little vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce on top.

Ingredients for Apple Walnut Bars:

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 cup pure cane sugar

1 egg

1 cup unbleached, all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 medium tart apple, peeled and chopped

3/4 cup chopped walnuts

(Of course, I used hickory nuts, because the grow in abundance on our property.)

Instructions for Apple Walnut Bars:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar with a hand mixer.  Add the egg.  In another mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients; flour, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon.

Gradually add dry ingredients to creamed mixture, beating just until combined.  Fold in apple and walnuts.

Pour into a greased 8-inch square baking pan.  Bake at 350 degrees F for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool on a wire rack and enjoy.

I love the kind of days you can light a fire in the fireplace or have a bonfire and put on a big pot of soup to simmer and enjoy all day long. It brings about memories of gatherings we had when I was a child, when we all gathered together to share a bowl of soup.

Mango fruit leather has turned out to be one of my kids' favorites. The sugar is totally optional, but it makes it much sweeter and cuts the tartness. The post Mango Fruit Leather appeared first on Mama’s Homestead.

Cream soda...do you like yours red or amber colored? I chose the amber colored version for my cream soda jelly. I like the flavor better. Plus, I added a teaspoon of vanilla, just for added vanilla goodness. The post Cream Soda Jelly appeared first on Mama’s Homestead.
